For ESCOs, Measurement & Verification (M&V) is more than a project closeout activity. M&V validates performance guarantees and demonstrates the value of every energy conservation measure. Selecting the right M&V approach, developing robust baseline models, and accurately accounting for the variables that drive energy consumption are essential to delivering credible savings results.
Verify was designed around the way ESCOs execute M&V. It provides the tools needed to develop defensible regression models, automate data collection, evaluate model quality, and generate transparent reports — all while reducing manual effort and helping teams deliver reliable, IPMVP-compliant savings analyses.

How Regression Modeling Works
Regression modeling can be used to quantify both whole-facility and equipment-level energy savings.
Whole Facility Modeling
For whole-facility M&V (IPMVP Option C), ESCOs can develop baseline models using either utility interval data (hourly or 15-minute) or monthly utility bills. These models relate whole-building energy consumption to independent variables such as outdoor air temperature, time of week, occupancy, production, or other operational factors. During the reporting period, the baseline model predicts how much energy the facility would have consumed under current operating conditions had the energy conservation measures not been implemented. Savings are calculated as the difference between the predicted baseline energy use and the actual measured consumption.
Equipment-Level Monitoring
For equipment-level M&V (IPMVP Option B), ESCOs can apply the same regression principles using data collected directly from building management systems (BMS), sub-meters, or equipment controllers. By modeling the relationship between equipment energy use and the factors that influence its operation (i.e., cooling load, flow rate, production, runtime) ESCOs can accurately quantify savings for individual systems, including chillers, boilers, air handling units, pumps, and other control measures.
Verify supports both approaches by enabling ESCOs to build statistically sound regression models using utility, interval, BMS, or sub-metered data, ensuring that reported savings are transparent, defensible, and aligned with industry best practices.
