Strategic Customer Targeting

Beyond Peak Load: Targeting Customers on Actual Curtailment Potential

Peak load tells you who consumes the most — not who will actually curtail. Power TakeOff scores every C&I customer on real curtailment potential, using a utility’s own interval meter, firmographic, and participation data.

Most C&I demand response programs still target customers on peak load — the easiest number to pull from the CIS, and one of the worst predictors of what actually happens during an event. High-peak sites often run on rigid schedules with little real flexibility, while moderate-peak sites can offer deep, dependable shedding potential. The result is a familiar pattern across the industry: outreach effort spent on the wrong customers, and program performance that falls short of what the portfolio could actually deliver.

Power TakeOff replaces that guesswork with a set of composite indices engineered directly from a utility’s own interval meter (AMI), firmographic, and program participation data — scoring day-over-day consistency, flexibility headroom, and the share of a site’s load that is genuinely curtailable versus fixed infrastructure demand. The result is a single, portfolio-wide score that turns raw meter data into a prioritized, execution-ready target list, enriched with feeder-level detail for grid-aware prioritization and an in-house NAICS model that closes long-standing gaps in customer classification. It’s a targeting framework that’s fully program-agnostic, built to extend just as easily to VPP, DSM, and electrification programs as AMI deployment accelerates across North America.

IN THE FIELD

Power TakeOff partnered with a large Pacific Northwest utility and its DR aggregator to put this approach into practice — unifying AMI, firmographic, and participation data across the utility’s entire eligible C&I portfolio into a single analytics-ready environment. Composite index scores now give program managers and aggregators a transparent, data-backed rationale for every recruitment conversation, filterable by score, geography, or participation history. Outreach and enrollment are underway, with enrollment conversion and realized curtailment being tracked head-to-head against the utility’s historical peak-load-based targeting.

Focus efforts and save time with grid intelligence. See how index-based targeting can sharpen your next DR, VPP, or DSM campaign.
